Iran Launches Dozens of Drones and ‘Sigel’ Missiles at Israel in Latest Strike
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

In an escalation of tensions in the Middle East, Iran has once again launched a coordinated missile and drone attack on Israel, marking the 11th assault under Operation Promised Sadiq III. This latest strike is particularly significant due to the first-ever deployment of the advanced Sigel missile system, showcasing Tehran’s growing military capabilities and technological sophistication in modern warfare.

Operation Promised Sadiq III: Iran’s Ongoing Response Strategy

This attack is part of Iran’s ongoing series of retaliatory operations against Israel, dubbed “Operation Promised Sadiq III”. The operation reflects Tehran’s vow to respond to Israeli military actions and perceived aggression in the region, particularly those linked to airstrikes on Iranian assets in Syria, Lebanon, and within Iranian borders.

Over the past few months, the frequency and intensity of these operations have increased, pointing to a new phase in Iran-Israel hostilities that involves not only conventional warfare tactics but also an advanced display of drone and missile technology.

Sigel Missiles Used for the First Time: A Technological Milestone

According to reports from Iranian state media, this latest offensive featured the first operational use of the “Sigel” missile, a high-tech projectile designed to evade enemy air defenses and strike with surgical precision. The missile is reported to travel at high altitudes, deploy intelligent maneuvering systems, and is equipped with enhanced guidance technology.

Tehran claims that Sigel missiles were aimed at high-value Israeli targets, including strategic cities like Tel Aviv and Haifa. While exact damage assessments remain unconfirmed, Iran maintains that some of the missiles reached their intended targets, overcoming Israeli defense barriers.

Dozens of Drones Accompany Missile Barrage

Alongside the missile launches, dozens of drones were deployed in a coordinated aerial assault. The drone fleet included combat UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) capable of carrying explosives and conducting surveillance. These drones reportedly entered Israeli airspace alongside the missiles, creating a multi-layered attack intended to overwhelm the Israeli Iron Dome and David’s Sling defense systems.

Israeli Alarms and Air Raid Sirens Sounded

As the attack commenced, air raid sirens blared across several parts of Israel, including central and northern regions. Civil defense units issued alerts to residents, instructing them to seek shelter. Social media footage from Tel Aviv and surrounding areas captured the sound of explosions and the activation of Israel’s interceptor missile systems, which fired into the sky in attempts to neutralize incoming threats.

Israeli Response: Retaliatory Strikes Targeting Tehran and Beyond

In response to the Iranian barrage, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) swiftly launched a series of airstrikes on Iranian military sites, particularly in and around Tehran. According to Israeli military spokespersons, the counterattack was conducted in three phases throughout the night, focusing on missile storage depots, command centers, and centrifuge installations potentially linked to Iran’s nuclear program.

Strategic Targets Included Centrifuge Facilities

One of the key focuses of Israel’s response appears to be Iran’s centrifuge sites, which are integral to its nuclear enrichment capabilities. While Israel has not officially confirmed damage assessments, sources within the IDF suggest that key military facilities were either disabled or critically damaged in the strikes.

Iran’s Air Defense Claims Interception Success

Despite Israel’s claims of successful strikes, Iranian media outlets reported a different account. They assert that Iran’s integrated air defense systems were activated promptly after detecting incoming aircraft and missiles and successfully intercepted a significant portion of Israeli munitions.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated that its surface-to-air missile units destroyed several incoming Israeli missiles mid-air and prevented a larger-scale disaster in the capital. Video footage aired on Iranian state television reportedly shows missiles being intercepted over Tehran.

Rising Regional Tensions: What’s at Stake?

The recent escalation underscores the intensifying conflict between Israel and Iran, two of the most powerful military forces in the Middle East. The current situation poses serious risks of further regional destabilization, especially as proxy groups aligned with both nations become more involved in cross-border operations.

Broader Geopolitical Implications

  • Lebanese Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militant group, has already expressed its full support for Iran’s retaliatory strikes.
  • Western nations, including the United States and members of the European Union, have called for restraint while closely monitoring the situation.
  • Saudi Arabia and Gulf countries have expressed concerns about potential spillover effects of a prolonged Iran-Israel confrontation.

The use of advanced weapons like the Sigel missile also raises alarm among international defense analysts, as it signals a quantum leap in Iran’s missile technology that could alter the strategic balance in the region.

Israel’s Air Defense: Stretched to the Limit?

Israel’s Iron Dome and other missile defense systems, while generally effective, appear to have been stressed by the volume and complexity of this latest attack. Analysts note that multi-pronged assaults, combining drones and high-speed missiles, can saturate even the most advanced defense grids, leaving critical infrastructure vulnerable.

Previous Instances of Iranian Drone Warfare

Iran has increasingly relied on asymmetric warfare tools, especially drones, in its confrontations with both Israel and U.S. assets in the Middle East. From attacks on oil tankers to precision strikes in Syria and Iraq, Iranian UAVs have been widely deployed in multiple conflict zones.

The development and now-deployment of the Sigel missile adds another sophisticated weapon to Tehran’s arsenal, further complicating Israel’s defensive strategies.

Public Sentiment and Civilian Impact

In both Iran and Israel, the public has been on edge. While governments continue their military posturing, ordinary citizens face the fear of airstrikes, power outages, and infrastructure damage. In Israel, several reports of minor injuries and damage to residential buildings were confirmed, although full casualty reports have not yet been released.

In Iran, officials have not acknowledged civilian harm but did confirm that residential areas in Tehran experienced shockwaves from the nearby missile interceptions.

International Reactions and Calls for De-Escalation

The United Nations and major world powers have issued urgent appeals for de-escalation. UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed “deep concern” over the latest developments and urged both countries to exercise maximum restraint to prevent the situation from spiraling into a full-scale war.

Diplomatic Channels Under Pressure

Efforts are reportedly underway through backdoor diplomacy, with Qatar and Oman once again playing potential mediator roles. However, given the mutual distrust and longstanding hostilities, the road to peaceful dialogue appears difficult.

Conclusion: A Dangerous New Chapter in Iran-Israel Conflict

The 11th wave of Iran’s Operation Promised Sadiq III marks a significant turning point in the Iran-Israel conflict. The introduction of advanced Sigel missiles and the combined use of drones signal a new level of warfare sophistication. While both nations have managed to absorb each other’s strikes without a full-blown war erupting, the margin for error is narrowing.

With more attacks expected and neither side showing signs of backing down, the international community watches anxiously. The latest incident is a stark reminder of how quickly modern technology can escalate age-old rivalries into catastrophic confrontations.
