The international parliamentary body, the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), will send an observer to Pakistan to review the proceedings against former Prime Minister Imran Khan in order to promote democratic governance, accountability and cooperation among its members.
Imran Khan’s legal team member Khalid Yousuf Chaudhry, while giving details about the IPU’s decision, said that the observer will look into the proceedings of the 190 million pound case and the Toshakhana series of cases.
The lawyer claimed that these cases are examples of a campaign of ‘political exploitation’ rather than legal accountability. Another focal point of discussions with the IPU will be the GHQ case, in which Imran Khan was indicted on May 9 without solid evidence or reliable legal basis, raising further questions about the impartiality of the justice system.
Khalid Yousuf said that the IPU observer visiting Pakistan in the coming weeks will have the authority to review the conditions of Imran Khan’s detention in Adiala Jail and to review the trial procedures, an important step in ensuring a transparent assessment of whether fundamental rights such as the right to a fair trial have been violated.
