KARACHI: There is an alarming increase in the number of young people suffering from heart attacks in Shahr-i-Quaid and health experts have attributed this to fatty foods like biryani, haleem, halwa puri and fast food.
Eating more of the above-mentioned foods while the body is less active is increasing the chances of early heart attacks and strokes among the city’s youth, experts said.
This was said in a session titled ‘Food, Health or Disease?’, which was held on the last day of the Health Asia Conference at Expo Center Karachi.
In the session, experts from National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD), Pakistan Islamic Medical Association (PIMA) and Pakistan Nutrition and Dietetic Society (PNDS) urged the youth to avoid unhealthy habits. Reduce consumption of foods and adopt a healthy lifestyle.
NICVD Professor Tahir Sagheer said that the consumption of unhealthy food is increasing in Karachi and unfortunately it is very cheap and accessible.
He said that commercially prepared biryani, nihari, haleem and halwa puri are made with ghee rich in trans fat which makes people prone to fatal diseases and premature death.
