Lahore Set to Host ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2025

The excitement of international women’s cricket is set to return to Pakistan as the International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially announced the schedule for the Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2025. The tournament, which will be hosted in Lahore from April 9 to 19, will see six teams battle for the final two spots in the upcoming ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, scheduled to be held in India later this year.

With matches taking place at two iconic venues—Gaddafi Stadium and the Lahore City Cricket Association (LCCA) Ground—cricket fans in Pakistan will witness top-tier women’s cricket action firsthand. The tournament promises high-intensity encounters as teams strive to secure their place in the biggest global event in women’s cricket.

Tournament Format and Participating Teams

The ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier will feature six teams:

  • Full-member teams: Pakistan, Bangladesh, West Indies, and Ireland
  • Associate-member teams: Scotland and Thailand

The tournament will follow a league format, where each team will play against every other team once. A total of 15 matches will be played across the competition. The top two teams at the end of the league stage will qualify for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, joining the already qualified teams.

Teams That Have Already Qualified for ICC Women’s World Cup 2025

Six teams have already secured direct qualification for the Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 based on their performance in previous tournaments and ICC rankings:

  • Australia
  • England
  • New Zealand
  • South Africa
  • Sri Lanka
  • India (Host Nation)

The teams ranked seventh to tenth in the ICC Women’s ODI rankings were required to compete in the qualifiers, offering them another chance to book their World Cup spot. Additionally, the two highest-ranked associate teams as of October 28, 2024—Thailand and Scotland—earned their place in the qualifiers, further raising the stakes of the competition.

Key Fixtures and Match Schedule

Cricket enthusiasts in Pakistan can look forward to a series of thrilling encounters. Here are some of the key matches to watch:

  • Opening Day (April 9):
    • Pakistan vs. Ireland at Gaddafi Stadium
    • West Indies vs. Scotland at LCCA Ground
  • Crucial Encounters:
    • April 14: Pakistan vs. West Indies at Gaddafi Stadium
    • April 17: Bangladesh vs. West Indies at LCCA Ground
    • April 19: Pakistan vs. Bangladesh at LCCA Ground

With so much at stake, these matches are expected to be closely contested, as teams will be pushing for a place in the final two slots of the World Cup.

Match Timings

To accommodate local and international audiences, the match timings have been structured as follows:

  • Day matches: Start at 9:30 AM (Pakistan Standard Time)
  • Day/Night matches: Start at 2:00 PM (Pakistan Standard Time)

ICC’s Excitement Over the Upcoming Tournament

Geoff Allardyce, Chief Executive of the International Cricket Council (ICC), expressed his enthusiasm for the tournament, stating:

“We are delighted to announce the schedule for the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier 2025. These six teams are just one step away from the Women’s Cricket World Cup, and we are sure they will be eager to perform at their best. On behalf of the ICC, I wish all the teams the best of luck for this tournament in Lahore, which will be an important part of the preparation for the World Cup.”

Significance of the Tournament for Pakistan

Hosting the Women’s World Cup Qualifier is a significant achievement for Pakistan. It not only underscores the country’s growing presence in international women’s cricket but also reaffirms its capability to host major global sporting events. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has expressed its commitment to ensuring a smooth and successful tournament, with top-notch facilities and security arrangements in place.

A Step Forward for Women’s Cricket

The ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier serves as a vital platform for emerging teams like Scotland and Thailand to showcase their talents on the world stage. It also provides an opportunity for full-member teams such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, and West Indies to refine their game strategies ahead of the main event.

As anticipation builds, cricket lovers around the world will be eagerly following the action in Lahore. With high stakes, competitive spirit, and a chance to qualify for the biggest event in women’s cricket, this tournament promises to deliver exciting moments and fierce competition.

Stay tuned for more updates as the Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2025 unfolds!
