Haiti: 40 migrants died in a fire on a boat from Haiti bound for the Turks and Caicos Islands.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said in a statement on Friday that the stricken boat left the Haitian coast on Wednesday with more than 80 migrants en route to Turks and Caicos.
According to the statement, the Haitian Coast Guard rescued 41 people.
IOM chief Gregory Godstein blamed the tragic incident on Haiti’s security crisis and the absence of safe and legal migration routes.
He said that Haiti’s socio-economic situation is in trouble. The violent events of the past months are driving Haitians to take bold action.
