Washington: Bacteria that cause gum disease may also increase a person’s risk of head and neck cancer, says a new study.
Researchers found that more than a dozen types of bacteria were linked to a 50 percent increased risk of head and neck cancer.
“Our findings provide another reason to maintain healthy oral habits,” said co-senior author Dr. Richard Hayes.
Brushing and flossing your teeth can not only help prevent periodontal disease, but also prevent head and neck cancer, he added.
The researchers noted that some of these microbes contribute to serious gum infections that eat away at the jawbone and soft tissue around the teeth.
