GUATEMALA CITY: A bus in Guatemala City fell off a highway bridge and into a sewage drain, killing at least 50 people.
The bus full of passengers was entering the capital from the city of San Agustin Acasagostlán on a busy route when it fell into a sewage drain about 20 meters below a highway bridge, Ponte Bellos.
Spokesman Carlos Hernandez said the bodies of 36 men and 15 women had been sent to the provincial morgue.
Rescue officials have taken 20 injured people to hospital, and police have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
Guatemalan President Bernardo Arevalo has declared three days of national mourning and directed the country’s army and disaster agency to help with relief operations.
