Islamabad: The federal government on Friday asked fertilizer companies to reduce the price of fertilizer by up to Rs 3,000 per sack so that relief can be provided to farmers.
This was said during a committee meeting chaired by Minister for Industries and Production Rana Tanveer Hussain. The meeting reviewed the country’s fertilizer stock during the Rabi season. On this occasion, Rana Tanveer urged representatives of fertilizer companies to reduce the price of fertilizer per sack from Rs 12,000 to Rs 9,000.
During the meeting, it was informed that fertilizer companies are selling fertilizer to farmers at high prices, so they should provide relief to farmers by reducing prices. Representatives of the companies, while not assuring them of price reduction, said that they will present the matter before the company management.
The meeting was also informed that during the financial year 2023-24, 22 thousand tons of urea were sold for industrial and agricultural use and due to the increase in demand compared to local production, urea has to be imported into the country.
On this occasion, it was proposed that the sale of local urea be limited to the agriculture sector only and urea be imported for industrial needs or local urea be provided to industries during the months when its demand in agriculture decreases. During the meeting, Rana Tanveer assured that the availability of fertilizer for the needs of farmers will be ensured.
