Washington: US President Donald Trump’s senior advisor and Tesla CEO Elon Musk supported the US withdrawal from NATO, saying, “There is no justification for the US to defend Europe!”.
Elon Musk made this statement in response to a post on the social media platform X, which said, “The US should leave NATO now!”. To this, Musk replied: “We really should.”
The statement came at a time when NATO is about to celebrate its 76th anniversary, but its future is uncertain. US President Trump has repeatedly threatened to impose trade tariffs on the European Union and his soft approach to Russia over the Ukraine war has raised concerns among European officials.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on the issue that this is a “wake-up call” for Europe and that it is time for Europe to take action to defend itself. The European Union has agreed on a defense budget of 800 billion euros at a recent summit to strengthen regional security.
Trump’s policies have European officials considering the question of whether Europe can make its defense policy independent without the United States? According to the European Union, all allies must fulfill their responsibilities and it is time to reconsider the future of NATO.
