Canberra: A number of senators in Australia’s Senate have tried again to recognize Palestine as a state, but have faced failure due to the Labor Party government’s opposition to the resolution.
According to the report of Anatolu news agency, Mehreen Faruqi, the deputy parliamentary leader of the Australian Greens Party, presented a resolution to recognize Palestine in the Australian Senate.
Australia’s senators tried to recognize Palestine as an independent state a few months ago, and if approved, Australia would become part of the 145 countries that recognize Palestine as a state.
Mehreen Farooqui said in a statement on the social media website X that today I presented a simple resolution, which demanded basic and principled justice to recognize Palestine, I am happy that My colleague Senator Fatima Peyman showed courage and supported the resolution by taking a principled stand and took her decision against the stand of her party.
The young senator from Western Australia, Fatima Peyman, supported the cross-party resolution, marking the first time in Australian history since 1986 that a Labor member voted against her party in parliament even though her party was in government.
According to party rules, Fatima Peyman may face action for taking a position against her party’s decision.
Fatima Payman while announcing her decision in the Senate said that she was not elected as a representative on the basis of diversity.
Speaking to the media after voting in favor of Palestine in the Senate, she said, “I have been elected to serve the people of Western Australia and I will continue the traditions that I inherited from my late father.”
“I have taken a decision today, which I am proud of and everyone who is with humanity will be proud of,” he said.
Greens Party leader Adam Bendt criticized the government saying that they have acted shamefully by voting against the recognition of Palestine.
He said that this is a cowardly act. We have failed to do what more than 140 countries of the world have done, which is to recognize Palestine.
Adam Bendt also praised Fatima Peyman for her courageous decision to support the resolution in favor of Palestine in the parliament.
An attempt by the Greens Party to recognize Palestine was also made in Australia’s House of Representatives last month, but it was defeated by an overwhelming majority of 5 votes in favor and 80 against.
