Donald Trump Announces Thailand–Cambodia Ceasefire Agreement
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim credited for mediating renewed truce after days of border clashes
Washington:
US President Donald Trump has claimed that Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to restore a ceasefire following several days of renewed clashes along their disputed border.
In a statement shared on his social media platform Truth Social, President Trump said the agreement was reached after separate telephone conversations with the Prime Ministers of Thailand and Cambodia. According to Trump, both leaders consented to a complete ceasefire, effective from this evening.
Anwar Ibrahim’s Role in Thailand–Cambodia Ceasefire Mediation
Trump stated that the renewed truce follows the framework of an earlier peace agreement facilitated with the support of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, whom he praised for once again playing a crucial role in convincing both sides to halt hostilities.
“It is an honor for me to work with the Prime Ministers of Thailand and Cambodia to prevent what could have become a serious military conflict between two happy and glorious countries,” Trump said.
He recalled that in July this year, Thailand and Cambodia had signed a ceasefire agreement through the mediation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and with diplomatic efforts involving the United States. Further details of that agreement were later shared in October during a regional summit held in Malaysia, which Trump attended.
Despite the earlier peace deal, relations between the two neighbors remained strained, and fighting broke out again last week. Both countries have since engaged in intense propaganda campaigns against each other.
Border Dispute Behind Thailand–Cambodia Conflict
The conflict between Thailand and Cambodia has deep historical roots, largely stemming from competing claims over border territories. These disputes trace back to a map drawn in 1907, during the period when Cambodia was under French colonial rule. Thailand has long contested the accuracy of this map.
Tensions escalated further after a 1962 ruling by the International Court of Justice recognized Cambodia’s sovereignty over the disputed area—a decision that continues to face opposition among large sections of the Thai population.
