A study has shown that the diabetes medication smeglutide has a positive effect on people suffering from chronic kidney disease and diabetes. These individuals have less protein in their urine, less inflammation in their kidneys, and less blood pressure.
The international study, led by clinical pharmacologist Hedo L. Hersping from the University Medical Center Groningen in the Netherlands, showed for the first time that this diabetes drug, known as a weight-loss , is also effective for people suffering from chronic kidney disease.
Hedo L. Hersping got the idea for this research at the beginning of the global Covid pandemic.
Initially, they found that SGLT2, another drug used for diabetes, was also effective in people with non-diabetic chronic kidney disease. Later, they wanted to know whether smeglutide also has a positive effect on people suffering from chronic kidney disease and obesity.
The research results were published in Nature Medicine and presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Nephrology.
