Colombo: Left-leaning politician Anura Kumara Dissanayake has won Sri Lanka’s presidential election after a historic second round of counting.
No candidate secured more than 50 percent of the total votes in the first round of counting, where Dissanayake received 42.31 percent of the votes, compared to his nearest rival, opposition leader Sajith Premadasa, who received 32.76 percent. had promised tough governance and anti-corruption measures, emerged victorious after the second count.
Saturday’s election was the first since Gotabaya Rajapakse was ousted by mass protests in 2022 after Sri Lanka faced its worst economic crisis.
