The Federal Cabinet has approved the amendment in the Rules of Business 1973 regarding the closure of Pakistan Public Works Department (PWD).
The Federal Cabinet meeting was held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in which the 2-point agenda was considered.
During the meeting, the Federal Cabinet approved the amendment regarding the closure of Pakistan Public Works Department (PWD) in the Rules of Business, 1973, after which the department became inactive.
In the cabinet meeting, the government of Pakistan decided to implement the first phase of ML1, the cabinet also approved the financing agreement between China Pakistan Railways.
It should be noted that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had directed PWD to be terminated immediately due to poor performance and corruption in June. According to the records of the Ministry of Housing, PWD was established by Lord Dalhousie in 1854, almost a century before the establishment of Pakistan.
After the creation of Pakistan in 1947, this organization was renamed as Pak PWD and this organization was given the task of constructing homes for refugees and construction of roads and buildings across the country.
With Islamabad being made the federal capital of Pakistan in August 1967, 2 divisions of PWD were transferred from Karachi to Islamabad and were entrusted with the construction of Government Servant Residences and Federal Secretariat Building in Islamabad. .
PWD is engaged in maintenance and renovation of various government buildings in Islamabad including Prime Minister House, President’s House, Supreme Court, Islamabad High Court, Election Commission of Pakistan, 6610 employees are working in this department.
Apart from construction, PWD also provides technical assistance to investigation agencies NAB and FIA in inquiries while also helping oil marketing companies in verification of reserves.
