KARACHI: The number of chest infection patients started increasing due to climate change and air pollution in the city of Quaid.
Due to climate change and air pollution, Karachi is witnessing an increase in cases of chest infections. Chest infections are more common in children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems.
He said that the symptoms of chest infection include cough, fever, sore throat, cold and difficulty in breathing, but in most cases, the affected person recovers in 3 to 4 days. Dr. Shakeel said that increasing chest infections are also affecting people suffering from respiratory diseases. A chest infection can be transmitted from an infected person or child to other people and children and lasts for 3 to 4 days.
Chest infection causes cough in adults, while in children the ribs also start to move. In such a case, children are more affected because of this because children play with each other. Explaining the precautionary measures, he said that citizens should take care of hygiene and use face mask while leaving the house.
Dr. Shakeel further said that people suffering from respiratory diseases including COPD, bronchitis and asthma should take care of themselves. Every year due to climate change and environmental pollution, the number of cases of chest infection is higher than usual, but one of the reasons is that our society is less inclined to get the flu vaccine.
He said that every year medical experts recommend flu vaccine for children, elderly and people with weak immunity from August to September. The flu vaccine protects the body against flu and chest infections for up to a year, but check with your doctor before getting vaccinated.
