YORKSHIRE: The captain of a cargo ship has been arrested after a collision between two ships in the North Sea two days ago.
The Portuguese-flagged ship “Solong” and the US-flagged oil tanker “Stena Immaculate” collided off the coast of East Yorkshire on Monday morning.
Humberside Police said the 59-year-old captain of the cargo ship has been arrested for serious negligence.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said smoke was still rising from the cargo ship but there was no immediate risk of either ship sinking.
The German company Ernst Russ, which owns the Solong, confirmed to British media that the man arrested was the captain of the Solong. The company said he and other members of his crew were assisting with the investigation.
Transport Secretary Mike Keane said one crew member of the Solong was missing and presumed dead, while the search for him at sea ended on Monday evening.
According to British media, the Solong crew includes Russians and Filipinos, while the Stena Imperator has 23 American crew members, who are in Grimsby.
Police have launched an investigation into the accident and are working with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency to investigate.
HM Coastguard confirmed that 36 people have been safely brought to shore.
