Canadian media outlets have reported that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is likely to resign from his party and his position today.
The Globe and Mail reported, citing sources, that embroiled in controversy amid growing calls from within his Liberal Party for him to step down, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau may resign as leader of the Liberal Party on Monday.
However, it is not clear whether Trudeau will resign immediately or remain as prime minister until a new leader is elected.
The development comes as polls show that Trudeau’s party will lose badly to the opposition Conservatives in the federal election due in October this year.
In 2013, Trudeau took over as leader of the Liberal Party when the party was in deep trouble and had finished third in the House of Commons for the first time.
Trudeau’s resignation is likely to lead to calls to form a government capable of handling the next four years of President-elect Donald Trump’s administration.
A source told The Globe and Mail that Trudeau had spoken to Finance Minister Dominique LeBlanc about whether he would be willing to take on the role of interim leader and prime minister. However, if LeBlanc were to run for the Liberal leadership, that plan could be unworkable.
The Atlantic, Ontario and Quebec caucuses have indicated that most leaders would not support Trudeau. The three regions hold 131 of the 153 seats the Liberals hold in the House of Commons.
