Dhaka: Bangladeshi students stopped Awami League supporters from celebrating Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s death anniversary.
On the occasion of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s 49th death anniversary on Thursday, Awami League supporters in the capital Dhaka tried to visit Sheikh Mujib’s former residence, but were blocked by students wielding sticks and iron pipes.
Student protesters cordoned off the museum premises with barbed wire while groups of students were seen patrolling the area to stop Sheikh Hasina’s supporters.
It should be noted that the ousted Prime Minister Hasina Wajid, who escaped to India, appealed to her supporters to celebrate this day in full.
The protestors said that they have come out to stop the gathering of Hasina’s supporters because they may try to create chaos in the name of the anniversary.
It should be remembered that Sheikh Mujib and most of his family members were killed during a military coup on August 15, 1975 in a house located in Dhan Mandi area of Dhaka. Sheikh Hasina survived with her younger sister because she was studying. He was in Germany.
Sheikh Hasina had converted the house into a memorial museum during her tenure, on August 5 hours after the end of Sheikh Hasina’s regime, the museum was set on fire by protesters.
Earlier, August 15 was a public holiday in Bangladesh and the day was observed as a national day of mourning, but the interim government headed by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has now canceled the holiday.
More than 300 people were killed in the unrest that began in July with protests against the quota system for government jobs, which later turned into a movement against Hasina Wajid’s authoritarian government.
The coup eventually forced Hasina to abdicate and flee to India, ending her 15-year rule.
