BAKU: Azerbaijan and Armenia have said that the two countries have agreed to sign a peace agreement to end a 40-year-old conflict.
According to a report by the news agency Reuters, the Armenian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that it has prepared and finalized a draft of a peace agreement with Azerbaijan.
The statement said that the peace agreement is ready for signing and Armenia is ready to start consultations with Azerbaijan on the date and place for signing the agreement.
Meanwhile, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said that we are satisfied with the text of the draft for the peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia and the restoration of bilateral relations.
Despite statements from both countries, the final date for signing the agreement remains uncertain because Azerbaijan has said that the condition for its signing is a change in Armenia’s constitution, which makes major border claims.
Armenia, on the other hand, has denied these claims, but Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan recently said that the country’s founding documents need to be changed and also stressed the need for a referendum for this, but no date has been set for it.
It should be noted that the war between the two states that separated from the Soviet Union began in the late 1980s over the Nagorno-Karabakh region, which has been going on for a long time.
