Attack on Anti-Terrorism Judge's Squad in Khairpur: Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi Strongly Condemns Terrorist Incident
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Overview of the Khairpur Attack

In a deeply troubling incident that has sparked widespread condemnation, a terrorist attack targeted the security squad accompanying an anti-terrorism court judge near Khairpur, Sindh. The assault claimed the life of a brave police officer, Maqbool Sheikh, and left two other personnel injured. The attack is being regarded as a direct assault on the Pakistani justice system and the security personnel who serve on the front lines of the fight against terrorism.

The incident occurred when the convoy, providing security to the judge as part of his duties with the anti-terrorism court, was ambushed. While investigations are still ongoing, initial reports suggest that armed militants opened fire on the squad from a concealed position, exploiting the terrain and attempting to flee the scene undetected.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi’s Strong Reaction

Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi swiftly condemned the cowardly act. In his official statement, he paid glowing tribute to Shaheed Maqbool Sheikh, acknowledging his sacrifice in the line of duty.

“Maqbool Sheikh attained the highest status of martyrdom while performing his duty with unwavering commitment and valor,” said Naqvi.

He further expressed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family of the martyred officer and extended prayers for the speedy recovery of the two injured officers, whose identities are being withheld until families are informed.

Directive for Immediate Action

Interior Minister Naqvi has directed all law enforcement agencies to act swiftly and decisively. He emphasized that the attackers must be apprehended at all costs and brought to justice through an exemplary investigation.

“The enemies of peace and stability will not be spared,” Naqvi asserted. “This cowardly attack will not dampen the morale of our security forces or deter our resolve.”

He also instructed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sindh and relevant intelligence agencies to work together and launch targeted intelligence-based operations (IBOs) to apprehend those responsible.

Rising Threat to Judiciary and Law Enforcement

The attack highlights the increasing threats faced by Pakistan’s judiciary, especially judges dealing with terrorism cases, and the law enforcement personnel assigned to protect them. Over the years, there has been a pattern of threats and attacks on judges, prosecutors, and witnesses involved in high-profile anti-terrorism cases.

Legal experts have stressed the need for enhanced protective measures, including bulletproof transport, electronic surveillance, and secure travel routes for judicial personnel operating in sensitive regions.

Background: Terrorism in Sindh and Khairpur

While Sindh province has remained relatively stable compared to other regions in terms of militancy, Khairpur has seen occasional flashes of violence, largely driven by criminal gangs, feudal rivalries, and in rare cases, sleeper cells of banned outfits.

The growing collaboration between criminal networks and terrorist organizations is a serious concern for security agencies. These groups often exploit local grievances and tribal loyalties to stage attacks on security personnel or sensitive government officials.

Security analysts believe this incident could be part of a larger campaign to destabilize the legal framework fighting extremism in Pakistan.

Tributes from Across the Nation

As news of the attack spread, political leaders, human rights activists, and civil society organizations joined in condemning the act and paid tribute to the bravery of the martyred police officer.

Opposition leader Raja Riaz stated, “It’s time to build consensus across party lines on the security of our judiciary and law enforcement officers.”

Human rights advocate Asma Jahangir Foundation also issued a statement, stressing the importance of rule of law and protection for those who uphold it.

Funeral and Honors for Shaheed Maqbool Sheikh

The funeral prayers for Shaheed Maqbool Sheikh were held with full state honors in his hometown, attended by senior police officers, district officials, and local citizens. A guard of honor was presented, and the national flag was draped over the martyr’s coffin.

Police sources confirmed that financial support and employment assistance for the family of the martyred officer will be provided under the Shaheed Package announced by the Sindh government. This includes education for children, pension benefits, and a monetary grant.

Ongoing Investigation and Manhunt

Law enforcement authorities have sealed off the surrounding areas in Khairpur and launched a search operation. The Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) and Sindh Rangers are reportedly cooperating in the joint investigation.

Preliminary evidence, including spent bullet casings, CCTV footage, and eyewitness accounts, is being analyzed to identify the culprits. Forensic teams are also working to trace any digital footprints or mobile signals that may lead to the perpetrators.

A senior police official speaking on condition of anonymity confirmed that suspects have been detained for questioning, though no official arrests have been confirmed yet.

Security Measures Being Reevaluated

In light of the attack, the Ministry of Interior has reviewed the current security protocols for anti-terrorism judges and prosecutors across Pakistan. New guidelines are expected to include:

  • GPS tracking and panic buttons in official vehicles
  • Deployment of elite commando units for sensitive cases
  • Real-time intelligence coordination between law enforcement and judicial departments
  • Psychological support and training for personnel under constant threat

Reaffirming National Resolve Against Terrorism

Minister Naqvi concluded his statement by reiterating that terrorism will not be allowed to disrupt national peace and legal order.

“Let it be clear – we will not bow to terror. Every drop of blood spilled in the defense of Pakistan strengthens our resolve. Those who seek to destroy peace will face the full force of the law.”

He urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity, highlighting the role of community policing in combating extremism at the grassroots level.

Public Sentiment and Support for Security Forces

Social media platforms saw an outpouring of grief, support, and patriotic messages for the security forces. Hashtags such as #ShaheedMaqboolSheikh, #SaluteToOurHeroes, and #StandWithPolice trended on Twitter (X) and Facebook, with users sharing prayers and demands for justice.

Prominent celebrities, journalists, and influencers posted messages of solidarity with the police force and emphasized the importance of public cooperation in these challenging times.

Conclusion

The brutal attack on the anti-terrorism judge’s squad in Khairpur serves as a painful reminder of the threats that still persist in Pakistan’s fight against extremism. The martyrdom of officer Maqbool Sheikh must not go in vain. It is a call to strengthen our institutions, support our security forces, and remain united against the forces that seek to undermine peace and justice. With Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi’s firm stance and the nation’s unwavering support, Pakistan’s fight against terrorism will continue with greater resolve.
