England has seen a devastating four-year rise in alcohol-related deaths.
More than 8,200 people died from alcohol-related causes in 2023, up 42% from 2019, according to government figures.
Alcohol Health Alliance UK says it is unacceptable that alcohol-related deaths have reached record highs and could become a public health priority in the National Health Service’s 10-year plan in England.
Alcohol-related deaths have risen sharply across the UK due to the coronavirus pandemic. Heavy drinkers have been drinking more, while moderate drinkers have also been drinking more.
What’s more, when pubs were closed during the coronavirus pandemic, many people bought alcohol from shops and started drinking at home. Since then, deaths from alcohol-related causes in England have continued.
The review also found that most deaths were recorded in men who died of alcohol-related liver disease at the age of 75.
