Washington: The US has temporarily suspended the supply of classified intelligence information and weapons to Ukraine.
According to CIA Director John Ratcliffe, the decision was made after a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.
Ratcliffe said in an interview with Fox Business that “President Trump had doubts whether Zelensky was really serious about the peace process, which is why the decision was made to stop intelligence support.”
According to US officials, the decision has also resulted in a reduction in reconnaissance flights and surveillance activities for Ukraine, which could have a negative impact on Ukraine’s defensive and offensive operations.
The Ukrainian military relies heavily on US intelligence, especially to analyze the situation on the battlefield and predict enemy attacks.
Ratcliffe indicated that the suspension could be lifted soon if Zelensky assures the US president of peace.
Meanwhile, US and Ukrainian officials are assessing the potential impact of the decision, while CNN reported that military officials from both countries are assessing the damage caused by the aid suspension.
The development comes at a time when there is intense debate within the US over support for Ukraine and a possible reduction in aid to Ukraine is expected under President Trump’s new policies.
