Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Ahmad Khan has declared the post of opposition leader in the provincial house vacant in the light of the decision of the Supreme Court regarding specific seats.
During a press conference yesterday, Speaker Punjab Assembly Malik Ahmad Khan said that the opposition leader of Punjab Assembly Malik Ahmad Khan Bhachar was given office based on the seats of the Sunni Unity Council (SIC) in the House and the decision of the Supreme Court. The platform ceased to exist after , which stripped the Sunni Unity Council of its parliamentary status.
He announced that the members of the Sunni Ittehad Council, who had suggested the name for the Leader of the Opposition, had now moved to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI), leaving the post of Leader of the Opposition vacant.
It should be remembered that the Supreme Court annulled the decision of the Peshawar High Court and the Election Commission in the case of Sunni Ittehad Council reserved seats and declared Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf entitled to reserved seats.
The decision came on a set of appeals filed by the Sunni Ittehad Council against the Peshawar High Court and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) against the denial of reserved seats for women and non-Muslims.
The PTI-backed candidates contested the February 8 general elections as independents after being stripped of the party’s election symbol ‘Bila’ and then joined the Sunni Ittehad Council.
Although some quarters believe that the Speaker Punjab Assembly’s decision is mere political rhetoric, Supreme Court Bar Association President Shehzad Shaukat and senior advocate Mubeen Qazi said the move is in line with the court’s decision.
It should be noted that in early May, Speaker Malik Ahmed Khan suspended 24 women and 3 minority MPs elected on reserved seats and the Supreme Court ordered parties other than SIC/PTI to be reserved. He was barred from participating in the proceedings of the House after the ECP’s decision to allocate seats was suspended.
