The Palestinian state was recognized with the hope of peace for Palestinians and Israelis, British Prime Minister
London:
After Britain, Canada and Australia, Portugal has now officially announced its recognition of Palestine as a state, saying that Israel has not fulfilled other conditions, including a ceasefire.
According to a report by the news agency Reuters, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in a statement on the social networking website X that today Britain has recognized Palestine as a state, reiterating the hope for peace for Palestinians and Israelis.
The report said that Britain’s move is in line with more than 140 other countries, but will cause displeasure for Israel and its key ally, the United States.
According to the report, Canada and Australia have also recognized Palestine as a state and more countries are likely to recognize Palestine during the UN General Assembly session in New York.
It should be noted that Britain had given Israel an ultimatum in July this year that if the worst situation in Gaza did not end, Palestine would be recognized as a state.
Keir Starmer had said that Britain would recognize Palestine as a state if Israel did not take steps towards a ceasefire with Hamas, the provision of aid to Gaza, a clarification of the non-occupation of the West Bank, and the start of a peace process for a two-state solution.
In response to Britain’s decision, the head of the Palestinian mission in London, Hussam Zamalek, said that the decision to recognize a Palestinian state had been long awaited, which was necessary not only for Palestine but also for the fulfillment of Britain’s own responsibilities. He said that this step was a step towards justice, peace, and the irrevocability of historical mistakes.
Speaking to reporters in New York, the Portuguese Foreign Minister described the decision to recognize Palestine as a fundamental and permanent thought of Portugal’s foreign policy. Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel said that the two-state solution is the only way to sustainable and lasting peace in the region.
He acknowledged that recognizing a Palestinian state does not end the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, stressing that an immediate ceasefire in Gaza is essential.
