Researchers analyzed 10 synthetic hair products, including brands like Magic Fingers, Sensational and Shake-N-Go, which are widely used.
The products were found to contain benzene, a chemical that has been linked to acute myeloid leukemia, as well as methylene chloride, which has been linked to lung and liver cancer after long-term exposure.
Nine out of 10 products tested also contained lead, which can cause developmental problems in children and reproductive problems in adults, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Secondly, it is also important to note that the US Food and Drug Administration does not allow any level of methylene chloride in cosmetics.
