A new study has found that exercising on the weekend has more positive effects than exercising during the rest of the week in preventing the decline of mental health.
The study, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, found that exercising once or twice a day reduced the risk of mild dementia more than exercising regularly.
A weekend exercise regimen may be a more convenient option for busy people around the world, the study found. The research is also important because it shows that even busy people can reap mental health benefits by exercising or playing a day or two a week.
The researchers found in the study that weekend warriors (those who exercise on Saturdays or Sundays or days) had an average 15 percent lower risk of mild dementia compared to those who exercised more during the week. It was up to 10 percent.
The researchers found these exercise methods to be equally effective when controlling for factors such as age, smoking, sleep duration, diet and alcohol consumption.
