KAZAN: Ukraine carried out a 9/11-style drone attack on a residential building in the Russian city of Kazan, which also forced the city’s airport to close.
According to a report by the news agency Reuters, Russian aviation officials said that Kazan’s airport was closed after the Ukrainian drone attack, but has reopened after a temporary suspension.
Russian media reported that a Ukrainian drone hit a residential building in Kazan and drone attacks were also carried out in other areas. Kazan is located 500 miles east of the capital Moscow.
The Russian Defense Ministry said that the drone attacks were carried out in three phases in the city, with the air defense system destroying three drones in the air and the other three being shot down by an electronic warfare system.
Local media reported that no casualties were reported in the attacks, with the mayor of Kazan saying that public events during the weekend had been cancelled and that authorities would provide temporary accommodation for those displaced.
A media outlet believed to be close to Russian security services reportedly showed a drone crashing into a high-rise building, with the building then engulfed in flames.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova condemned the attack, saying that Ukraine had become embittered by its military defeats and was targeting peaceful civilians.
The Russian aviation authority Rosaviatsia said in a statement on Telegram that flights were also temporarily suspended at airports in Izhevsk, a small city northeast of Kazan, and Saratov, 400 miles to the south.
