Dhaka: As a result of heavy rains in Bangladesh, 8 people were killed and more than 2 million people were affected by floods.
According to the report of NDTV, the water level in the rivers has risen as a result of the ongoing rains in Bangladesh and there are fears of further floods.
Regional Police Chief Suboj Rana said that two boys died after a boat sank in the flood in Shah Jadur area.
He said that there were 9 people in the small boat, but 7 of them saved themselves by swimming while the two boys who died could not swim.
In two separate incidents, three people were killed when their boats collided with power lines scattered in rainwater, Kurigram police chief Bishwadeeb told AFP.
The government said in its statement that shelters have been set up in hundreds of places for flood-affected people in the northern region of the country where food and relief supplies have been sent.
Bangladesh Ministry of Disaster Management Secretary Qamarul Hasan said that more than 2 million citizens have been affected by the floods, 7 out of 64 districts across the country have been badly affected.
He said that the situation in the northern region could worsen in the coming days as the water level in the Brahmaputra, one of the country’s main waterways, is dangerously high.
Local disaster and relief official Abdul Hai said that among the worst affected districts is Kurigram where 8 out of 9 towns are submerged in floods.
