Hematologist Dr. Salman Adil of Aga Khan Hospital expressed these views while addressing the press conference held at Karachi Press Club on Friday.
He said that the rate of blood and glandular cancer cases is quite high in Karachi, while the cases of breast and colon cancer are also significant. The major government hospitals in the city have inadequate treatment facilities.
Dr. Salman Adil said that Civil Hospital and Abbasi Shaheed Hospital do not have any blood cancer treatment facilities, while Jinnah Hospital has an oncology department but there is a shortage of medicines. Similarly, no specific treatment for blood cancer is being provided in Indus Hospital.
He said that the government gives grants worth billions of rupees, but they do not do anything to improve the infrastructure. There is no government-level facility for blood cancer patients in Karachi, due to which the patients are facing difficulties. According to the World Health Organization, blood cancer accounts for 20% of the total cancer patients in Pakistan. While 80 percent are suffering from other types like breast, mouth, lung and colon cancer.
Dr. Adil added that haste in diagnosis should be avoided and urgent steps are needed to address the shortage of specialists so that effective treatment of blood cancer is possible.
