KYIV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said he is confident that the war with Russia will end soon after Donald Trump becomes US president.
Zelensky said he had a positive exchange with Trump during a telephone conversation after winning the US presidential election.
The Ukrainian president did not say whether Trump had made any demands regarding possible talks with Russia, but he said he had not heard anything from him that contradicted Ukraine’s position.
Trump has consistently said that his priority is to end the war, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
The US House of Representatives approved a $61 billion military aid package for Ukraine earlier this year to fight Russia.
The US has been the largest supplier of arms to Ukraine. According to the German research organization Kiel Institute for the World Economy, it has provided or promised to send $55.5 billion worth of weapons and equipment between the start of the war and the end of June 2024.
It should be noted that during the US election campaign, former President-elect Donald Trump repeatedly promised to end the war in a day, but he has not yet said how he intends to do so.
