In Europe, wind and solar power have overtaken fossil-fuel energy for the first time, according to a recent analysis.
Wind turbines and solar panels accounted for 30 percent of the EU’s total electricity in the first six months of 2024, according to energy think tank Ember, while the amount of energy generated from fossil fuels fell to 27 percent.
The transition to renewable energy is a major step by member states to move away from polluting power sources to meet climate targets.
Energy production from fossil fuels fell to an all-time low of 343 terawatt-hours in the first half of 2024, despite rising electricity demand. This amount was more than 500 terawatt hours in 2022.
The first half of the year shows the diminishing role of fossil fuels in the energy sector and the growing presence of renewable energy sources, said Amber’s data analyst Chris Roselove.
