England: According to health experts, more than a third of people with mental illness do not receive important medical evaluation.
More than a third of people with severe mental illness in Oxfordshire are not getting the all-important health tests they should have, new figures have revealed.
People with medical problems such as schizophrenia, psychosis or personality disorders may die 20 years earlier than the general population, the Centers for Mental Health said.
Figures from NHS England show that out of a total of 6,175 patients in Oxfordshire on the serious mental illness register, 3,925 had all required medical check-ups from the start of the year to March, while the rest did not.
This comes to a rate of 64 percent, which is significantly higher than last year’s 49 percent.
Experts believe that whenever possible, all patients should be included in an annual health screening that includes blood and urine tests, alcohol, smoking, and body mass index assessments.
