Tokyo: Researchers have set a world record for data transmission using commercially available optical fiber.
A team from Japan’s National Institute of Information and Communication Technology (NICT) has set a new record by transferring data at 402 terabytes per second. This rate is almost 5 million times faster than the average broadband speed in the UK.
The researchers, working under the guidance of the NICT-based Photonic Network Laboratory, said they have achieved this by developing a system capable of covering all transmission bands of standard optical fiber.
NICT says the new method of opening up previously unused wavelength regions could be adopted within future telecommunication networks.
Speaking about its work, NICT said that the newly developed technology will play an important role in increasing the communication capacity of the optical communication infrastructure as the future data services increase the demand exponentially.
