MARYLAND: A new study suggests that taking daily multivitamin pills may neither reduce the risk of death nor help prolong life in healthy people.
Researchers at the US National Cancer Institute reviewed data from nearly 400,000 healthy individuals over a 20-year period.
The study found no association between regular use of multivitamins and reduced risk of death.
The study, published in the journal JAMA Network Open, found that many people take multivitamins on a regular basis in the hope that the habit will improve their health. However, the pros and cons of using these pills on a daily basis are not clear.
Data on the association between pill use and mortality in studies prior to this study were limited due to short observation periods.
To fill this gap, the latest research examined data from three different studies based on 390,000 people. These individuals were studied for 20 years.
