Experts have recently revealed a link between gum disease and the deadly disease diabetes.
Recent research shows that diabetes is not only a major risk factor for periodontitis (gum disease) but that the relationship between the two conditions is bidirectional, meaning that they both influence and develop each other.
Chairman of the University of Periodontology, Dr. Anton Scalene, said that the relationship between gum disease and diabetes can be fatal over time.
He added that moderate or severe gum disease has long been associated with the risk of heart disease or early death.
It should be noted that diabetes affects more than 800 million people worldwide and occurs when the body either fails to produce enough insulin or the body’s cells become less sensitive to this hormone.
