Pollution from gas stoves causes 3,928 deaths a year in the UK, a new study has revealed.
These stoves in regular use emit hazardous gases that are linked to heart and lung diseases in addition to cancer. However, experts warn that awareness of these risks is very limited.
According to a study conducted in the European Union and the United Kingdom, the use of gas stoves shortens the average person’s life by two years.
“The nature of the problem is much worse than we think,” said study lead author Juana Maria, from Spain’s Jaume University Premier.
In the study, scientists found that 36,031 premature deaths in Europe and 3,928 in the UK were linked to gas stoves.
However, he cautioned that these stoves are linked to more deaths than the research suggests.
Their estimates are based on nitrogen dioxide only, excluding harmful gases such as carbon monoxide and benzene.
