SYDNEY: Spending a few months in a backyard can help frogs fight off deadly fungal infections, a new study has found.
Scientists in Australia placed small brick structures in sunny locations. Later, frogs infected with a fungus called chytrid took shelter in these structures.
Experts found that within a short time the frogs’ temperature rose enough to fight off the fungus. The results of this study were published in the journal Nature by team leader Anthony W. Wedel and his team.
Chytrid fungus attacks the skin. Once infected, this fungal infection blocks the flow of electrolytes, other fluids and oxygen to the body.
This can disrupt the animal’s ability to move and feed itself, which can be fatal later on.
