OTTAWA: The first human bird flu case has been recorded in Canada, which is a rare occurrence.
Canada confirmed its first human case of bird flu when a teenager tested positive for the virus, according to media reports.
The teenager, from the western province of British Columbia, is believed to have contracted H5 avian flu from a bird or animal, the province said in a statement.
The province said it is tracing the teen’s contacts to determine the source of the illness.
“This is a rare occurrence and we are conducting a full investigation here in British Columbia to fully understand the source of the case,” British Columbia Health Officer Bonnie Henry said in a statement.
Canadian Health Minister Mark Holland assured the public that the risk to them is low.
