Lahore: Pakistan’s national debt has been reduced, according to a document from the Ministry of Finance, the debt of 73.9 percent of GDP in 2022 has now decreased to 67.2 percent.
This is a major achievement of the Shehbaz Sharif government and concrete steps should be taken to reduce debt. According to the law, the national debt should remain below 60 percent of GDP so that loans and interest on them do not harm the Pakistani economy.
The tendency to take loans without hesitation during the PTI government also played a major role in increasing inflation.
When PTI came to power, Pakistan’s national debt was Rs 24,950 thousand billion, however, during its three years and eight months of rule, external and internal loans of Rs 20,558 thousand billion were taken, after which the national debt reached Rs 45,538 thousand billion. The coming governments could not reduce it and it has now reached Rs 71,200 thousand billion.
