A new study has found that doing too much ‘dom scrolling’ on your phone can make you more depressed.
In a study conducted at University College London (UCL), scientists have found that using smartphones incorrectly can make users’ feelings worse.
Dom scrolling usually occurs when users view negative and unpleasant content for a long time.
The study, published in the journal Nature Human Behavior, found that people who had worse mental health read more negative content online.
The study conducted by scientists involved several experiments involving 1,000 people. These people were subjected to psychological tests and later had them browse the internet for 30 minutes and then their history was obtained from them.
The researchers then analyzed the language used on websites in their search history, which showed that people with poor mental health had viewed negative content.
In further tests, the scientists changed the websites of these people to see if this was an addiction or a disability.
The researchers found that there were elements of both, and that people who were given more negative content to read felt worse before they found more negative content in the destructive spiral.
