DG ISPR Briefs on Jaffar Express Attack and Regional Security Dangers

DG ISPR reveals details on the Jaffar Express attack, linking it to regional terrorism and foreign involvement, highlighting security challenges.

Jaffar Express Attack:

In Balochistan’s Bolan Pass region, gunmen ambushed the Jaffar Express on March 11, 2025, causing the train to derail and capture hundreds of passengers. 26 people were killed in the incident, including civilians and security personnel, while numerous others were injured.

In a press briefing, DG ISPR Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry cited intelligence assessments that connected the attack to RAW (Research and Analysis Wing) and blamed it on Indian-sponsored terrorism. He asserted that India has been aiding extremist organizations in Pakistan and facilitating cross-border terrorism on Afghan territory.

Pakistan’s Response and Security Challenges:

DG ISPR revealed that the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) orchestrated the attack using IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices) and strategic hostage division tactics. In a quick operation, Pakistan’s security forces—including the Army and Frontier Corps (FC) killed 33 militants and freed the captives in less than 36 hours.

But he cautioned that misinformation efforts using AI-generated phony movies to disseminate propaganda are another aspect of India’s hybrid warfare plan. To combat terrorism and protect national stability, he emphasized the necessity of more stringent diplomatic measures, intelligence cooperation, and improved border security.

Ambush:

The ordeal commenced around 1:00 PM when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated on the railway tracks, halting the Jaffar Express in a remote mountainous area devoid of telecommunication signals. This strategic location was deliberately chosen by the assailants to impede immediate communication and rescue efforts. Subsequently, militants from the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) launched an assault, targeting a nearby Frontier Corps (FC) checkpost, resulting in the martyrdom of three FC soldiers.

The attackers, organized into multiple groups, swiftly surrounded the immobilized train. They segregated passengers, keeping women and children inside the train while escorting other hostages to various external locations. This tactic not only heightened the terror among the captives but also complicated potential rescue operations.

Casualties and Immediate Impact:

The initial phase of the attack was devastating. Reports indicate that 26 passengers were martyred, including 18 security personnel from the army and FC, three officials from Pakistan Railways and other departments, and five civilians. Additionally, 37 out of the 354 passengers sustained injuries, some of whom were in critical condition, suggesting the possibility of a rising death toll.

Rescue Operation: Strategy and Execution

In response to the crisis, Pakistani security forces, including the army, FC, and the Special Services Group’s Zarrar Company, mobilized swiftly. Given the challenging terrain and the presence of suicide bombers among the militants, the operation demanded meticulous planning and precision. The forces established a perimeter around the area, conducting reconnaissance to assess the situation and devise a tactical approach.

The rescue mission, spanning approximately 36 hours, culminated in the elimination of all 33 terrorists without further harm to the hostages during the final phase. This outcome was hailed as one of the most successful hostage rescue operations in recent history, considering the complex circumstances and potential for higher casualties.

Regional Implications and Accusations:

The attack reignited discussions about the broader geopolitical dynamics influencing terrorism in Pakistan. Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), asserted that India was the principal sponsor of terrorism in Balochistan. He highlighted that the terrorists had utilized both Indian and Afghan weapons in the Jaffar Express attack and previous incidents, suggesting a nexus aimed at destabilizing the region.

Furthermore, DG ISPR criticized the Indian media for disseminating propaganda during the incident. He presented evidence indicating that Indian outlets circulated artificial intelligence-generated images and fake videos to misrepresent the situation, thereby engaging in informational warfare to legitimize the terrorists’ narrative.

Baloch Liberation Army:

The BLA, a separatist militant organization, has been actively seeking greater autonomy and control over Balochistan’s rich mineral resources. Their tactics have evolved over the years, from targeted attacks on security forces to high-profile operations like the Jaffar Express hijacking. By executing such audacious assaults, the BLA aims to draw international attention to their cause and challenge the Pakistani state’s authority in the region.

Survivors’ Accounts:

Survivors of the Jaffar Express attack have recounted harrowing tales of endurance and bravery. Some passengers reportedly pretended to be dead for extended periods to avoid detection by the militants. These personal narratives shed light on the profound psychological and emotional toll such incidents impose on civilians, highlighting their resilience in the face of terror.

International Reactions and Diplomatic Tensions:

The incident has further strained Pakistan’s relations with neighbouring countries. Accusations of external support for militant groups operating in Balochistan have led to heightened diplomatic tensions. Pakistan’s allegations against India and Afghanistan regarding their involvement in supporting separatist elements underscore the complex regional dynamics and the challenges in addressing cross-border terrorism.

Media’s Role: Propaganda and Perception

The role of media, particularly in neighbouring countries, has come under scrutiny following the attack. The dissemination of AI-generated content and fake videos by certain outlets has been criticized for fueling misinformation and exacerbating tensions. This incident underscores the need for responsible journalism and the challenges posed by technological advancements in the spread of disinformation.

Government’s Stance and Future Measures:

Pakistani officials have reaffirmed their commitment to fighting terrorism and preserving national security in the wake of the incident. To combat the external aspects of terrorism, the administration has pledged to improve border security, bolster intelligence operations, and pursue diplomatic initiatives. To resolve underlying problems that militant groups take advantage of, Balochistan is also seeing a renewed emphasis on socioeconomic development.

Navigating the Path Forward:

DG ISPR reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to combating terrorism and maintaining national security in his closing remarks. He gave the country his word that security personnel are still on guard and will keep up their defense against any threats from violent organizations with foreign sponsorship. The Jaffar Express attack is a sobering reminder of both the continued difficulties and Pakistan’s tenacity in the fight against terrorism.
