DUNDE: People who experienced severe trauma or stress in their childhood are at higher risk of developing a number of long-term health problems in adulthood, a new study has found.
A study conducted at the University of Dundee in Scotland found that every stressful experience in childhood increases the risk of long-term health problems later in life by up to 13 percent.
Adverse childhood experiences (ACE) are traumatic or stressful experiences that occur before the age of 18.
They have a variety of negative experiences, including being a victim of violence, neglect, domestic problems and bullying, drought or war.
Prior to this study, ACEs had been associated with greater risks of poor health and social outcomes in older age.
A team led by Dr. Dhin Senaratne conducted a meta-analysis and systematic review of 25 studies involving 370,000 people to determine the link between ECEs and long-term health problems.
