A British-Australian mining company’s facility in Canada is to introduce carbon-free aluminum smelting technology. This step taken by the company is aimed at accelerating the transition towards eco-friendly methods of production.
Elysis technology aims to replace traditional aluminum smelting methods, eliminating all direct greenhouse gases and producing oxygen. The technology will be installed at Rio Tinto’s Arveda in Quebec.
The company will set up a demonstration plant at the smelter with 10 large pots that will operate at 100 kiloampere.
According to a statement issued by the company, the total investment in the project will be 285 million dollars, in which Rio Tinto and the government of Quebec will contribute 179 million dollars and 106 million dollars respectively.
The trial run at Rio Tinto will be critical to the full commercialization of the Elysis technology, the company said.
It should be noted that aluminum has long been used to make durable items due to its strength, light weight and endless renewable possibilities.
