Academics Staff Association (ASA) of Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) Observed Protest Against Discontinuation of 25% Tax Rebate for Full Time Teachers and Researchers

Today, Academic Staff Association (ASA) of Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU), in collaboration with the Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Associations (FAPUASA), observed a “Black Day”. The protest was organized in response to the government’s decision to discontinue the 25% tax rebate for full-time teachers and researchers, a move that has sparked widespread discontent among the academic community.
The protest at AIOU was led by Dr. Iqbal Ahmad Jatoi, President of ASA, AIOU, and President of FAPUASA’s Federal Chapter. A large gathering of faculty members assembled at the main gate of University Campus to voice their concerns and demand the immediate restoration of the tax rebate. The participants emphasized that the discontinuation of this rebate not only undermines the financial stability of faculty members but also devalues the critical role they play in the nation’s development through teaching and research.
Dr. Jatoi, addressing the gathering, stated, “The 25% tax rebate was a recognition of the tireless efforts of teachers and researchers who dedicate their lives to the pursuit of knowledge and the betterment of society. Its discontinuation is a severe blow to the morale of the academic community and a step backward for education in Pakistan. We urge the government to reconsider this decision and restore the rebate immediately.”
The protest at AIOU was part of a nationwide movement called by FAPUASA, with universities across Pakistan observing the “Black Day” in solidarity. Faculty members and researchers from various institutions joined the call to action, highlighting the collective resolve of the academic community to safeguard their rights and advocate for policies that support education and research.
The Academic Staff Association (ASA) and FAPUASA have vowed to continue their efforts until the government addresses their demands.
