JOHANNESBURG: For the first time in the history of South Africa’s highest court, a female judge has been appointed as Chief Justice.
The current Deputy Chief Justice Mandisa Maya will replace Marymond Jondo of the South African High Court.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has nominated Mandesa Maya as the first female Chief Justice effective September 1 after consultation with the Judicial Service Commission.
President Cyril Ramaphosa said in a statement that this is an important milestone for the country.
Current Deputy Chief Justice Mandesa Maya will take over on September 1, with incumbent Chief Justice Marymond Jundo’s term ending on August 31.
