The Federal Cabinet has approved withdrawal of increase in basic electricity tariff for protected and non-protected household consumers consuming up to 200 units of electricity per month.
On the directive of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, approval was taken from the federal cabinet on an emergency basis, the federal government will give a subsidy of about 50 billion rupees to provide relief on the tariff.
Earlier, the federal cabinet had approved to increase the tariff per unit from Rs 3 95 paisa to Rs 7 12 paisa per unit for protected and non-protected domestic consumers consuming 200 units per month.
According to government sources, the increase in electricity tariff has been withdrawn for protected and non-protected domestic consumers up to 200 units per month.
This decision will provide relief to consumers consuming up to 200 units per month for 3 months from July to September 2024. Under the decision, about 2.6 million electricity consumers will benefit.
It should be noted that last week the federal cabinet had approved an increase in the basic tariff per unit of electricity by 7 rupees 12 paise, the federal cabinet had also approved an increase for protected and non-protected consumers up to 200 units.
According to sources, it was approved to increase the tariff of protected customers from 1 to 100 units by 3 rupees 95 paise and the tariff of protected customers from 101 to 200 units per month by 4 rupees 10 paise per unit.
Apart from this, an increase of 7 rupees 11 paise in the tariff of non-protected consumers for consumption of 1 to 100 units per month and 7 rupees 12 paise in the tariff of 101 to 200 units of non-protected consumers per month was approved.
