Xinjiang: The world’s largest solar plant has been activated in China. The plant is capable of supplying energy to the small country with an annual electricity consumption of over six billion kilowatt hours.
Located in the desert region of China’s northwestern province of Xinjiang, the facility covers two hundred thousand acres, roughly the size of New York City.
The 5 gigawatt complex, which was connected to China’s grid on Monday, is enough to meet the energy demand of a country the size of Luxembourg.
China has done the most worldwide to move the country towards solar energy, increasing its production capacity by more than 50 percent by 2023.
This new solar farm has become the world’s largest once operational, surpassing the Ningxia Tenigli and Golmid Wutomeran solar projects in China.
A recent report published by the International Energy Agency (IEA) hailed China’s move towards renewable energy as “tremendous”. According to the report, last year in 2022, China produced solar energy equivalent to the energy produced worldwide.
