New research suggests that getting protein from vegetables instead of meat can have surprising benefits for your heart.
A 30-year study found that people who consumed vegetable-based protein were 19 percent less likely to develop heart disease than those who consumed meat-based protein.
Additionally, researchers found that people who consumed vegetable protein also had a 27 percent lower risk of coronary heart disease.
On the other hand, Dr. Frank Ho, professor of nutrition and epidemiology at Harvard University and senior author of the study, said, “Most of us need to shift our diets toward plant-based proteins, and we can do so by eating less meat and processed meats and more beans and nuts. Such a dietary pattern is beneficial not only for human health but also for the health of our planet.”
The researchers also believe that eating a completely plant-based diet may work best when it comes to reducing the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD).
