Former legendary spinner Saqlain Mushtaq revealed the reasons behind the famine of spinners in the country.
In an exclusive interview given to Cricket Pakistan, former spinner Saqlain Mushtaq said that when the board called me to correct Saeed Ajmal’s bowling action, there were more than 30 other spinners who were accused of chucking by the local coaches.
He said that I had a one-month contract, I was also requested to fix the action of these young players. “I used to be with Saeed Ajmal in the morning and evening sessions, but in between took time out to guide these bowlers and spend a week with them,” he said. Should work but I was told to send them all back as having more than 15 degrees of action.
Saqlain Mushtaq said that I told the Pakistan Cricket Board officials that the poor children will become unemployed, their departments etc. will leave them, their homes will be disrupted, but they said leave, we don’t have time and so it is. All the players went back.
He said that he told the board officials that now the other finger spinners of Pakistan will also become traditional bowlers and stop doing some separation. No bowler with magical abilities was found.
The former spinner said that there was a psychological block in the whole country and no kid thought of doing anything new, there was no spin bowling coach in the country, even after that PCB never held camps to find good spinners. Didn’t even bother.
He said that none of the officials said that come and set up a spinner camp. I went to Australia twice. Coaches also came, I kept saying in Pakistan but nothing happened.
