According to a new survey, more than 70 percent of secondary school students in the US are using AI chatbots to help with homework.
“I noticed that many of my classmates around me were using AI Large Language Models (LLMs) and ChatGPT in particular is used in many school assignments,” said San Jose, an 11th grader at The Harker School in California who helped with the survey.
San, along with researchers from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and the University of California, Santa Barbara, surveyed 306 students in grades 6 to 12 to find out how often they use AI chatbots for homework.
The results, published on the server arXiv, revealed that 71 percent of students said they had used large language models (LLMs) for their homework at least once. This rate is higher than the use of AI chatbots among adults.
Students reported using LLMs for a variety of subjects, including language arts, history, and math assignments.
